December 2013

Another quiet month due to the demersal ban that finished on the 15th December. There are plenty of fish out there as those that
have been fishing report having to release lots of snapper, dhufish, coral trout and the likes.
The cray season opened on the 15th October but most anglers wait until the “whites” start to move usually mid-December.

Cray Fishing
I heard that the crayfishing has been extraordinary around Perth this year with most boats getting their bag every morning.
It’s been a bit different up this way! I put my pots in on the 9th December and the results have been poor.
Our tally from 3 licences, ie. 6 pots are as follows: 3,6,5,9,5,10,4,7,3,4,11,5,3,1,0. So it is right down, about half from last year!

Son Ben is up for the holidays and took the 6.1m boat out every day with his girlfriend Lisa and fellow crayfisher Kaz.
They got their share of the crays as well.

These pics are stills from the Gopro footage Lisa took during the week.

One of the better days with a few crays
and some underwater footage of the sharks that come up and eat the old
bait that is thrown into the water.

Big Cod Day

Kent Muir and Jason Edwards called in early this month needing a well-earned break from contract fencing out Paynes Find area.
Hot dirty work was rewarded with a great weather day and some good fish from the 5.3m boat.
They went out to the 3 mile and found fish all over the sounder. Being jigs and lure only fisherman, Kent dropped down
a knife jig on his 2500 size Sustain with 10lb braid only to lock up solid to this big cod. He got it up after a long battle
but had to release it due to the demersal ban.
Jason was next up with another great cod.

A troll on the way back close to the river mouth resulted in the first tuna for the season from any of my boats.
Well done Kent.

Demersal Ban over!
The 16th December coincided with a very nice day so I went out in the 7.8m boat with son Ben, girlfriend, Lisa and Sue.
We went south trying for a mackerel at the end of the cliffs, a known mackerel hotspot without success, so we
dropped anchor at a spot down by Wagoe. Within minutes of the first drop, big snapper were coming up,

 Ben got an 8.3kg dhuie
and Lisa lost a couple before she got hers.

Sue got the biggest during a double hook-up with Ben’s dhuie. We were bagged out within 45 minutes and headed home for breakfast!

6.5m hire
Michael Steen had the 6.5m boat last Monday and went for a fish after putting a craypot in just out from Frustration.

They got a snapper and morwong but dropped a few more and release an undersized snapper .
Here, Rod Taylor with his 610 mm snapper and Kev Matthews with the 620 mm morwong.
They go out again on Boxing Day for a fish and to pull their pot.

Each month I award Bite of the Month to someone who catches the best fish from one of my boats.
From this month onwards together with Striketech reels I am giving away a Striketech reel to the Bite of the Month winner.
Kent Muir wins outright this month with a big estuary cod that took a jig dropped down at the three mile just out from the river mouth this month. Hooked up on a knife jig using his 2500 size Sustain with 10lb braid Kent had had a lot of trouble on his hands. He got it
up after a long battle but had to release it due to the demersal ban. Great fish Kent.

Fishing in Mozambique!

I get sent photos now and again from a South African his mate’s fishing successes Africa.

Some of the fish landed are quite extraordinary such as big giant herring, strange trevally etc.

How big was the shark that took a bite from this shark!
This is on Bazaruto Island just off Mozambique, Google map above,
and they hire a fishing vehicle to access the 4km long sand spit that you can see on the extreme north west of the island. It drops into deep water and the fishing is quite good they say!
They said the highlight was about a 30kg black marlin trying to eat a small spoon on the sand island.
It followed the spoon into a metre of water twice and ate the spoon, but they couldn't set the hook.  fading line
